In this new era of open learning, a wealth of educational resources, technology and the plethora of innovative thinkers, dreaming big is now a way of life. Everyone wants to be an Entrepreneur. The reality, however, is a little bit different. Running your own business is no easy task, it requires discipline, dedication, and hard work. The big question is “Are you up for it?”
If you are ready to begin this entrepreneurial adventure, be prepared to work every day (and even some nights). The truth is there are not any eBooks or $20/month magical programs or predictive software that are going to eliminate or reduce the workload that is required to make your business successful.
I overheard a business owner say recently, “Hopefully, the breeze will blow in my direction next year and business will take a turn for the better”. Dear reader, that’s whimsical thinking that won’t result in the outcomes of success you desire.
Here are five (5) very simple keys, that are often seemingly overlooked that you need to address if you want to become a successful Entrepreneur.
1. Do your Homework
Mum and Dad always kept saying “Do your Homework”, although we preferred to play, not really ever truly understanding the importance of “doing our homework,” until we are adults. If you internalize this statement we will recognize that it’s an instruction to us if we fully understand and master any subject or task “We must do our homework.” We must review the fundamentals to be able to fully understand and practice what we have learned within the prescribed conditions for the achieving the best results. As entrepreneurs, we must ensure that we are masters of the skill-set for that product or service we offer before making it available within the appropriate environment. Simply put, provide a quality product or service solution in the most accurate way, in the right market and you will achieve the results of satisfied customers, and increased returns on your investment.
2. Start as you want to Continue.
Take note of this little statement “start as you want to continue”, for it is powerful and indeed instructive of a mindset which we need to adopt if we truly want to succeed on this new journey. At first, the novelty of being the boss of your own company is extremely exciting, but then as with everything else, this feeling subsides and you may start losing valuable momentum. Start as you want to continue, “Get up, Get going, and Get doing” even when you don’t feel like it. Each day I want you to keep in mind that you must work hard (hustle) and continue as you “started”. Slacking off or giving up is not an option, and won’t assist you in getting closer to your goals.
3. Learn something New Daily.
Staying ahead of the competition with your service or product means knowing and providing what your customers require as their needs and wants change. It is your job every single day to listen attentively to what is being said and what is implied but not spoken. Striving to become a successful entrepreneur means learning as you go.
Learning can take on many forms — industry conferences, mentors, coaches etc. There is always something you can do every morning that will have a huge impact on your success – simply read. Reading allows us to grasp information from some of the smartest people in the world who share their expertise and logic, which through their insights can benefit us to become better entrepreneurs.
4. Collaborate or Disintegrate.
Many Entrepreneurs start off thinking “I could do it all by myself” because, for many individuals, trust is a big factor. Working 18-hour days become the modus operandi as people try to do it all by themselves. Don’t get confused “Hustle doesn’t mean hassle”, you need to work smart. “Collaborate or Disintegrate” simply means if you choose not to collaborate with others or delegate responsibility you will deplete your time and energy trying to do it all by yourself.
Collaborating is an effective way of doing business with other experts in your field to bring about strategic winning outcomes, and it gives you time to focus on more important tasks, such as developing strategies and growth plans for your business. Once you understand this key, you will enjoy the experience that comes with owning your own business and the type of growth that you need to succeed.
5. Declare Daily “Giving Up is not an Option”.
I should probably start this by saying “You’re a Winner!”
Indeed, we can all be winners, but let’s keep it real. There is that saying “success is about preparation”, and to be a winner you simply need to do one big thing, which is “prepare, prepare, prepare” through ongoing learning and practice in your field of expertise. For once that whistle blows, there is no stop sign or water break halfway down the lane. In order for you to eventually become a winner, you will need to focus all your energy and momentum on your goal.
Challenges will come, mistakes will occur, however, learn from the experience and then put them behind you. Don’t dwell on them or waste time looking back. Promise yourself that you will not quit, no matter how difficult the journey becomes.
Let’s say it together “Giving Up is not an Option”.
Giving up is for cowards – it’s the easy way out.
There are going to be times that the task at hand is impossible and business is slow, and you will feel like you want to give up, but that is the easy way out.
If your greatest desire is focused on winning this race you must “show up” every day ready to give 100 percent, as the success of your business depends on it.
Stay focused and be a “Winner”.
Congratulations on your new Journey!
